Workforce group urges Shelby County to partner on training for people returning from incarceration

Representatives from the Center for Employment Opportunities asked commissioners for county investment, partnership on reentry supports and help securing state funding to scale vocational training that places participants in commercial-driving and other skilled positions.

Representatives with the Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) presented a brief overview of an advanced training and transitional employment model that focuses on people returning from incarceration. Courtney Atkinson, CEO's director of policy and business development, said the program shifted toward high-skill vocational training such as CDL pathways and described outcomes from the local program: "Since 2018, we have served over 800 individuals across Memphis and Shelby County..." she said, urging the county to scale and partner with CEO to multiply placements.
