Springfield Board Convenes Closed Session for Student HIB Hearing

President Meredith Murphy opened the meeting and read the board's public notice and rules for public comment, citing the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act, Public Law 1975, Chapter 231: "Pursuant to the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act, Public Law 1975, Chapter 231, the Board Secretary caused notice of the meeting to be given to the public and the press on January 5, 2026 and revised on January 23, 2026, March 1, 2026 and March 10, 2026." She also explained the public comment format and the three-minute limit per speaker.
The board recorded attendance at roll call with five members present — Vice President Tracey Rinaldi, Mrs. Adriana Silva, Mrs. Laura Gamarekian, Mrs. Jennifer Wishna and President Meredith Murphy — and several members absent. At 10:12 AM Mrs. Jennifer Wishna moved that the board enter executive session to discuss "Student Matters"; Mrs. Adriana Silva seconded the motion. The motion passed on a voice vote recorded as AYE-5, NAY-0.
Board materials state the executive session was expected to last about 30 minutes and that the board "may take action during public session" following the closed meeting; the minutes of the executive session will be released when the reason for confidentiality no longer exists.
No details of the HIB hearing are included in the public minutes in keeping with the confidentiality of student matters. The board announced its next regular meeting for March 23, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the JDHS IMC.
