Council seeks ordinance change to split responsibility for wide shared-use paths
Councilors agreed to draft legislation assigning the first joint/first 4 feet of a shared-use path to the property owner and the outer portion to the city to make sidewalk repair responsibility consistent as paths widen to 8–10 feet; staff directed to prepare a PL amendment for review.

Council members debated how to allocate maintenance and repair responsibility for multi-use paths that are wider than traditional sidewalks. The central proposal is to hold property owners responsible for the first longitudinal joint or the first 4 feet nearest the property (mirroring sidewalk responsibility) and make the city responsible for the additional width beyond that.
