Sedgwick County panel approves 30‑day extensions for eight fire‑aid agreements

The Sedgwick County Fire District No. 1 board voted unanimously to temporarily continue eight existing fire‑aid agreements until Sept. 23, 2026, and authorized the board chair to sign continuation letters and substantially similar letters for other municipalities as recommended by the fire chief. Chairman Bluebaugh moved the recommendation and the motion passed on a roll call vote of 5–0.

Fire Chief Doug Williams told commissioners the short extension is intended to allow participating communities time to complete their budget processes while county staff and city partners work to finalize a new mutual‑aid agreement. "We're bringing this here today so that we're going to give an extension on these 8 agreements for the, 4 communities in an effort to, work through the, getting the new mutual aid agreement signed," Williams said. Commissioner Beatty said he supports a limited extension to get cities through budget adoption but rejected requests for year‑long or multi‑year extensions because of lingering safety concerns. "Can we get a year? Can we get 2 years? I have not been supportive of that and I will not support that," Beatty said.

The motion authorized the board chair to sign continuation letters and to sign substantially similar continuation letters for any other municipality recommended by Fire District No. 1’s fire chief. The clerk called the roll and recorded affirmative votes from Commissioners Meissner, Beatty, Howell, Wise and Chairman Bluebaugh, yielding a 5–0 approval. Staff and city leaders will continue negotiating the replacement mutual‑aid agreement during the extension period.
