Board picks Environmental Health for first county efficiency audit in phased redesign

As a test case for a broader countywide efficiency initiative, supervisors at the retreat agreed to begin with a performance audit of the County Environmental Health department. The board described the audit as a first, relatively contained target to identify efficiency gains and to develop a playbook that could be applied to other departments later.

Supervisors asked staff to scope the performance audit, including the audit’s objectives, scope, estimated costs and an expected timeline for completion, and to return with a recommendation to a board meeting (transportation and planning committee or regular board agenda) so the board can authorize next steps. The aim is to produce a manageable, measurable improvement in processes that could be replicated elsewhere.
