Alders debate large TID package as concerns mount over developer commitments and long tax impact

A prolonged debate at the City of Racine Common Council focused on a multi-district TID package that would amend, create, or close multiple tax incremental districts, including proposed lakefront and Lincoln King-area districts. Alderman Weidner warned that the package would commit future tax increments — which benefit the city’s redevelopment fund — for up to 27 years and said, "Tonight, before a single shovel hits the ground, before any developer even signs a letter of intent, the public carries all the risk." He pointed to a $21,000,000 projection in development incentives for the 725 Lake Avenue site and said there is no current developer under contract for that parcel.
