Commission approves temporary stabilization work for Turner Hall annex

The Historic Preservation Commission approved a staff-recommended plan to temporarily stabilize the north annex facade of Turner Hall, an individually designated historic property. Staff described the proposal to install two bent steel C-channels secured with rods and to perform targeted masonry repairs; staff emphasized this is a temporary stabilization measure while a longer-term preservation plan is prepared.

Emilio Ditori, executive director of the Milwaukee Turners, described the urgency: "it's a gorgeous lovely building and it's alive," and said the organization is pursuing a historic structures report and fundraising to guide full restoration. Staff recommended using Type O or natural hydraulic lime mortar for repointing rather than Type N to avoid excessive Portland-cement content on the historic brick. Commissioners asked technical questions about attachment methods and long-term plans before approving the measure with staff conditions.
