Porter County approves highway salt rationing plan as supply, cost concerns mount

The highway superintendent told commissioners the county has taken delivery of 3,300 tons of salt and proposed rationing (prioritizing bridges, hills and intersections) to avoid exceeding the state-bid maximum; commissioners approved the plan and the superintendent will seek a $200,000 appropriation.

County highway staff presented a salt purchasing and rationing plan after reporting current deliveries and limits under the state contract. The superintendent (speaker S5) said the county has already taken delivery of about 3,300 tons and that the state bid requires a minimum purchase of 80% and allows purchases up to 120% of the bid. He warned that if the county exceeds the 120% cap it would be forced onto the open market where prices can spike.
