Meriwether County adopts temporary moratorium on new data center permits

The Meriwether County Board of Commissioners voted Feb. 24 to adopt a temporary moratorium on accepting new data center development applications in the county’s unincorporated planned industrial district. Staff said the pause—effective Feb. 24 through Aug. 23, 2026 unless terminated earlier—gives the county time to determine whether water, distribution and fire‑protection systems can support the demands data centers impose.

County staff explained that the moratorium would apply only to new applications submitted after the effective date and would not affect permits already issued or complete applications filed before Feb. 24, 2026. "The purpose of the moratorium is to allow the county a limited period of time to evaluate whether the existing public infrastructure, including water supply, distribution, and fire protection capacity is sufficient to support the demands associated with data center facilities," staff said. Commissioners discussed the scope and potential consequences, and a commissioner moved to adopt the resolution; the motion passed.
