Board approves new traffic-control technician classification, MOU and inspector upgrade

Secondary Roads presented a proposal to replace one Highway Maintenance Worker I position with a newly created Traffic Control Technician (Grade 2) to centralize responsibilities for sign placement, electronic cataloging of signs and locates. The county engineer said the change updates duties and pay to attract applicants and noted, “The county has roughly 7,000 signs that fall under our responsibility.” The board approved the reclassification by voice vote.

The board also authorized a memorandum of understanding with Chauffeurs/Teamsters Local 238 to cover the traffic-control classification and approved placing the current Building Zoning and Environmental Inspector II (grade 14, step 3) into an Inspector I position (grade 15, step 3) after the employee earned commercial/industrial electrical inspector certification. County staff said the certification was anticipated and budgeted for; the board approved the personnel and labor-relations items 3–0.
