Aspen council hears update on Cozy Point Ranch restoration, programs and habitat work

City of Aspen parks and natural-resources staff gave the City Council a comprehensive update on Cozy Point Ranch at the June 1 work session, outlining the ranch’s history, recent infrastructure projects and current uses.

John Spies, senior open space and natural resource manager, traced the ranch’s municipal history from the city purchase in 1994 through the 2018 management plan. He said the plan’s eight themes—ranging from sustainable agriculture to ranch heritage—guided recent work and programming. Spies described passive recreational uses, equestrian and hiking trails, and summer programming run by lessees: “Today was the first day for both Cozy Point LLC and the Farm Collaborative. The numbers there are 4,500 campers a summer. Per summer. Yes,” Spies said when council members confirmed the figure.

Staff also highlighted the site’s historic resources and training uses, including the red barn (listed on the county historic register) and recent large-animal rescue and wildland-fire training with the Aspen Fire Protection District. Spies said beaver activity and a city-imposed 50-foot setback from Brush Creek have supported riparian recovery and that hydrologists have been engaged to identify additional interventions.

Parks staff emphasized the ranch’s multiuse role for education, agriculture and public safety training, and invited further public input as the city prepares a ten-year management-plan update later this year. The presentation closed with offers from staff to provide additional financial and project-detail follow-ups requested by council members.
