Council narrowly approves irrigation upgrades at Cozy Point Ranch after debate

The Aspen City Council on May 26 approved Resolution 71 to fund irrigation upgrades at Cozy Point Ranch after a council debate over the city’s role as owner and steward of the property.

Councilor Bill raised concerns about the city paying for farming equipment and questioned whether the property should be city‑owned or transferred to another steward, saying he “really don’t know why the city of Aspen continues to own Cozy Point Ranch” and that investing another $120,000 felt difficult to justify. Other council members defended the purchase as preserving western heritage, providing educational opportunities for local students and supporting wildlife and recreational uses. One councilor noted the farm collaborative had opened a new “third space” that increases educational use of the property.

A motion to approve Resolution 71 was made and seconded; the roll call showed four votes in favor and one against (Councilor Guth recorded a “no” vote). Council also noted a work session on Cozy Point scheduled for June 1 where the issue will receive additional discussion.

What this means: the irrigation upgrades will proceed; council signaled continued stewardship of the property but also a willingness to examine long‑term ownership and operational models at the June work session.
