Term-limits private act fails to get required votes to advance

Aug 17, 2026

A proposed private act to send a term-limits question to the state legislature (for later referendum) failed to secure the 16 county-commission votes required to advance; proponents noted it would then go to a referendum only after passage at the state level and a second county vote.

The full story

Commissioner Jeremy Mansfield brought forward a private-act resolution intended to send a term-limits proposal to the state legislature for consideration; proponents said a multi-step path would be required before county voters would see a referendum. Mansfield explained that even if the commission provided the required 16 votes to forward the proposal, the state legislature would need to pass it and the commission would have to ratify that action again before the question could be placed before county voters, likely not before the 2028 general election.
