Atmos Energy outlines pipeline replacement through Towne Lake; work will affect park access

Atmos Energy presented plans to replace an aging trunk line through Towne Lake, replacing roughly 2.5 miles of 6-inch pipe with about 2.65 miles of 12-inch pipe, enabling in-line inspection and increasing capacity; work is expected from late 2026 into spring 2027 and will require temporary closures and some canopy clearing.

Atmos Energy representatives told the McKinney City Council on Aug. 18 that a trunk-line replacement project (D921212) will run through portions of Towne Park/Towne Lake and nearby corridors, increase pipeline capacity and enable in-line inspection ("pigging"). Josh Raines, senior engineer with Atmos, said, “The purpose of the project is infrastructure renewal.” He told council the work will replace roughly 2.5 miles of 6-inch steel with about 2.65 miles of 12-inch steel, increase inspection capability, and provide additional capacity to serve future growth, including the new amphitheater.
