Commission hears engineering concerns about grid, decommissioning and possible rate impacts

Consultant Jessica Fieldhouse of C. S. Davidson, Inc. addressed the commission on environmental and infrastructure constraints related to potential data centers, highlighting power-grid considerations and the need for decommissioning plans.

Commissioners raised concerns about potential impacts to the local electric distribution system, noting that in other states data-center development has been associated with significant jumps in distribution fees on residential bills. The commission requested engineering analysis to quantify local grid capacity and to identify infrastructure upgrades or mitigation measures that might be required.

The meeting also discussed whether utilities might require additional transmission infrastructure and whether such projects could take land through processes involving the Public Utility Commission. No specific engineering report was presented at the meeting; the commission asked staff and consultants to return with more detailed technical evaluations at the next meeting.
