Committee backs study of large data centers, adds energy developer to working group

The joint committees advanced SCR 95 and SR 90 asking the Hawaii State Energy Office to convene a working group to study potential impacts of large data centers on electric utilities, natural resources and the state's climate goals.

A representative speaking for the Public Utilities Commission urged that the working group itself define what "large" means in the Hawaiian context, noting island grids differ in scale and that hyperscaler data centers of "a couple hundred megawatts" could equal "20, 30% of the grid" on some islands. The PUC representative said that definition and the group's composition will shape energy planning and resource needs.

Members asked whether independent power producers or renewable energy developers should be included; committee members proposed adding an energy developer familiar with data centers. The chairs recommended adopting several PUC‑recommended amendments and adding an energy developer to the working group.
