Commission Approves 18–19‑Foot Roundabout Sculpture Despite Safety Concerns

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission voted May 5 to install a large public art piece in the Taly Road roundabout, approving the Cultural Arts Commission’s selection despite objections from residents and two commissioners. The roll-call vote recorded seven yes and two no votes; Commissioners Fisher and Johnson voted no.

District commissioners and staff reviewed safety issues raised by residents, including sight-line obstruction and potential reflectivity from headlights. Commissioner Johnson summarized community concern: "So, it's 18 feet tall and it's 3,000 lbs. And there is some reflectivity um concerns, especially at the the end of the day when the sun sets and at in the morning when the sun goes up." TPW staff and the mayor said line-of-sight calculations were performed and that final design review will again verify sight lines and non-reflective surface treatments.

Supporters pointed to other successful roundabout art installations and argued that properly engineered designs and non-reflective finishes can mitigate concerns. After discussion, the commission approved the installation with staff direction to confirm line-of-sight and reflectivity checks during final design.
