Residents split over Google data center; calls for revenue-sharing with schools

Public comment at the June 15 Morgan County meeting reflected a mix of support and concern about the planned Google data center and the EDA that will capture development increment.

Jake Thacker, director of the Monrovia Youth Football League, described positive interactions with Google and recounted donations to local nonprofits, while Andy Tower urged the board to "be bold" and consider a formal revenue-sharing arrangement between the TIF and Monroe Gregg Schools. "Be bold," Tower said, urging benefits to flow to the school district during the life of the TIF rather than waiting until its expiration.

Neighbors and other residents raised environmental and quality-of-life concerns. Jacob Deo asked about water usage and heat impacts, and Shawn Walker, a neighbor across from the data-center site, said many nearby residents felt their input carried little weight and asked that TIF resources be directed toward small businesses and neighborhood needs. Commissioner Adams confirmed that Google had already donated approximately $185,000 to county public schools to support technology programs and said commissioners were in ongoing conversation with the Monroe Gregg superintendent about collaboration.

Incoming Monroe Gregg Schools Superintendent Andrew Grismore requested a closer and earlier partnership with the county, saying the district should be at the table as development decisions are made rather than hearing about them after the fact. Commissioners Collier and Adams both expressed support for more proactive engagement with the school district.
