Resident says repeated crashes at Midtown intersection demand engineering study

A Midtown resident described a recent collision in which a car struck a house at a Ninth Street intersection, causing a natural-gas leak and leaving neighbors without gas service for up to an hour. The speaker said this was the third crash at that intersection and that a prior city action—removing a parking space—had not prevented further collisions.

The resident said staff had been contacted and that traffic-control devices should be considered only after an engineering study or application of traffic-engineering criteria. "Se produjo un accidente en el cruce... Hemos estado sin suministro de gas entre cuarenta y cinco minutos y una hora aproximadamente," the speaker said, and asked the council to ensure the city evaluates the site technically and reports back to neighbors.

Councilmembers later referenced a set of south-area safety and lighting upgrades requested by constituents and asked staff for updates on crosswalk painting and traffic evaluations.
