Fire chief backs flexible turnarounds, committee agrees to minimum unobstructed radii

Aug 17, 2026

To accommodate emergency vehicles, the fire chief recommended allowing hammerheads and Y-turnarounds as alternatives to cul-de-sacs and called for clear, unobstructed turnarounds; the committee agreed to require a minimum 50-foot unobstructed radius and 40-foot driving surface.

Committee members agreed and proposed minimum unobstructed dimensions: a 50-foot turnaround radius and at least a 40-foot driving surface for the turning area to ensure emergency vehicles can operate safely.
