Collin County approves schematic design for courthouse expansion after public presentation

Collin County Commissioners unanimously approved schematic plans for Phase 1 of the county courthouse expansion after a public presentation by the county's Director of Building Projects, Sandeep Katuria.

"Today's update is the schematic design milestone for Phase 1 of the Courthouse Expansion Project," Katuria said during the presentation, which covered the courthouse addition, an inmate-holding expansion, a multi-level parking garage and a pedestrian bridge linking the facilities. The presentation noted that several slides and secured areas were redacted for security reasons.

Katuria described the courtroom layout as having five rows and a total of 78 seats, including 72 fixed seats plus wheelchair and bariatric accommodations, and said elected-official parking would total 52 spots. The presentation also included a schematic of a new parking garage described in the record as "5 13 parking spots" (transcript formatting ambiguous). Commissioners asked no questions during the public portion and agreed the redacted materials could be shown later in executive session.

After returning to open session, the court formally adopted the schematic plans "as presented." The motion to adopt was seconded and carried on a 5-0 vote.

The schematic-adoption vote followed an earlier presentation and will allow staff and the design team to proceed to the next design milestone and contract-document phase. The judge indicated the court will review the redacted security details in executive session and that staff will bring follow-up materials to the court for further consideration.
