Staff outlines facility projects, grants and staffing changes

City staff updated the Pickleweed Advisory Committee on multiple facilities and staffing matters at the Aug. 5 meeting. Craig Barman, assistant library and recreation director (filling in), said Christy Bucker stepped down from her supervisor role at the end of June and staff are filling the vacancy temporarily while seeking a longer‑term supervisor; Stephen Rogers (program coordinator) and other staff continue operations.

Staff reported the park restroom replacement remains on the work plan but has been delayed by design and permitting reviews; the restroom building "may be installed by spring of 2027," staff said. Library construction at the campus is progressing with an expected reopening in October or November 2026. The Pickle preschool renovation is scheduled for summer 2027 to avoid disrupting the program; staff also reported receipt of a $147,000 Community Development Block Grant to support related facility work.

The city also noted a recent property acquisition at 620 Canal Street (about 1.65 acres) intended for a future park and pedestrian bridge; staff said they received an initial $800,000 grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission for priority conservation/design feasibility work. Staff said community outreach on the future park design will begin this fall and encouraged committee input.
