How to report code violations in Bakersfield, according to Code Enforcement supervisor

Bakersfield residents with concerns about overgrown lots, abandoned vehicles or suspected housing-code violations were urged to use the city’s complaint channels by Jose Gonzalez, the city’s code enforcement supervisor.

"If someone sees out there that believes it's a code complaint, I strongly recommend the app because the app also lets you take pictures," Gonzalez said, noting the app lets the public track the status of a ticket. He also gave the department's direct contact information: residents can call 661-326-3712 or email BLDCode@bakersfieldcity.us.

Gonzalez described three submission paths: a voicemail complaint line that records details and optional callback requests, an email address for code complaints, and the mobile app. He said voicemail reports become officer investigations when recorded and that leaving contact details helps staff respond more quickly, though anonymous tips are accepted and kept confidential.

The supervisor recommended that homeless-related complaints be routed to the Community Vitality hub at 661-326-3737 so those reports can be triaged to the appropriate departments.
