Police chief says Monroe handles about 13,000 calls annually and reports mixed crime trends

The City of Monroes police chief presented the departments annual report to the Common Council, summarizing calls for service, staffing methodology and recent crime trends.

"We we annually have about 13,000 calls for service, and we were pretty close with that again this year," the police chief said, explaining that staffing decisions are driven by incident-based reporting and a multiyear average rather than a fixed per-capita ratio. The chief noted the busiest shift runs roughly 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

In crime statistics, the chief said crimes against persons showed slight decreases overall but reported more aggravated and simple assaults compared with the prior year; vehicle thefts rose while some property crimes declined. He said the departments solvability factors remain relatively strong and emphasized community-police partnerships and data-driven staffing.

The chief told alderpersons that this was his last annual report after 31 years of service and thanked the council for the opportunity to serve. There were no formal actions tied to the police report during the meeting; council members thanked the chief and offered procedural follow-up in June.
