Residents raise concerns about recall ballot language and Mac management during public comment

Several members of the public used the commission’s public‑comment period to air competing views about an active recall election affecting local governance and management of the Madras Aquatic Center (MAC).

Les Weidner told commissioners he believes the recall petition language contains accusations that courts and the state have already disproven and urged the board to consider whether the ballot language meets standards of fairness and accuracy. He asked the commissioners to consider whether the county should halt or disqualify the ballot language if it does not meet that standard.

Circulator Sheila Fabian said she helped gather signatures and defended the petitioners, saying she has spoken with more than 500 people who were concerned about mismanagement and alleged waste at the MAC, including claims about repeated pool closures, unpaid maintenance and staff scheduling issues. Multiple other residents (Bill Robothon, Susan Barker, Kathy Carey) offered variations—some urging the board to act to protect public facilities and finances, others defending the petitioners and urging voters to decide.

Chair thanked speakers and said commissioners would review community input and take appropriate actions after election results are known. Commissioners said they plan to discuss process options at a meeting after the election if needed.
