West Richland adopts state-required climate element for comprehensive plan
Council accepted the new climate element required by state law, covering six statutory topics (heat, flooding, GHG reduction, water conservation, wildfire and related issues); staff said only one policy is required specifically for greenhouse-gas reduction and council passed Resolution 50-26.

Planner Colin Cortez walked council through the newly required climate element, noting that Washington State Department of Commerce requires local climate elements to address at least six statutory topics. The city used a regional spreadsheet developed with the Benton-Franklin Council of Governments and neighboring jurisdictions to select a focused set of goals and policies that meet the statutory requirements.
