Planning commission frames water policy as central to Onancock's comprehensive plan and economic development work

Commission members spent substantial time updating the commission on the comprehensive plan and assigning chapter leads for zoning, housing and economic development. Commissioners agreed that water—withdrawal permits, aquifer health, stormwater and mapping underground piping—will be one of the largest sections of the plan and will shape future decisions about annexation and development.

A commissioner summarized the technical framing for the commission: "we in Onancock have been permitted by the DEEQ to withdraw 10,600 gallons of water groundwater per month or 120 million gallons of groundwater annually from the aquifer," and said those numbers and related data should guide allocation and policy decisions. Members also discussed potential funding strategies for an economic development position, creating maps of vacant lots and addressing volunteer and institutional roles (EDA, Main Street) in plan implementation. They asked staff to compile municipal water draw data, historical usage and DEQ permit details and to invite DEQ/DEEQ to brief the commission on the recent USGS/DEQ report.
