Transit access, Route 305 changes shape debate over Athens Drive library sites

Transit connections and walkability were central topics in the Athens Drive library discussion on June 8. Staff reported that GoTriangle has approved a proposed realignment of Route 305 effective Aug. 2; the board heard maps showing the route and stops near Avent Ferry and Tryon Road.

Ashley Jacobs reported route distances to the Tryon Road site and said, "The nearest bus stop to that site is on GoCary Route 1. It's about 0.333 of a mile away, and the nearest stop on the GoTriangle Route 305 is about 0.667 of a mile away." She also said GoTriangle and GoRaleigh have indicated they would consider adding a stop if a library were located at the Tryon Road site.

Commissioners pushed for clarity about how riders would connect from the current Athens Drive location, how many transfers or routes would be involved, and about existing service at the Well Fed Garden site. Staff said the proposed Route 305 alignment is hourly on weekdays (6 a.m.–9 p.m.) and Sundays from 7 a.m.–7 p.m., and that the local Athens route (Route 11L) currently runs roughly every 40–45 minutes.

Several commissioners said transit access is a precondition for their support of Tryon Road; staff and deputy county management advised that a county‑wide transit plan review scheduled in the coming year will consider service priorities and that transit providers have expressed willingness to consider adjustments if the board prioritized the site.
