Weslaco ISD bond update: $160M program shows progress but multiple projects delayed by engineering and vendors

A district project status presentation listed dozens of bond projects — roofs, HVAC upgrades, vestibules, track work, restrooms, and gym demolitions — and estimated about $65 million of the $160 million bond is currently tied to active projects. "It's about roughly about 65 million into our $160 million budget," a presenter told the board.

Project managers walked trustees through schedules and common causes of delay: incomplete engineering designs, manufacturer lead times (e.g., door and HVAC equipment production), poor soil conditions at specific sites, and rebids due to cost. Several large projects remain in design or bidding phases; others are in construction but behind schedule.

Board members pressed staff on timeliness and contractor oversight. Trustees asked for clearer public postings and wanted the bond project presentations and backup materials available on the board book and district website; staff said they would post the materials and increase transparency.

On site‑specific issues, trustees asked whether temporary traffic and student‑safety plans were in place when main entrances were impacted, and discussed demolishing an unused pool that collects stagnant water. Administrators said they are coordinating with contractors to prioritize safe access and will return with more detailed updates.
