Weslaco ISD reports enrollment decline and more teachers qualifying for state incentive program

Superintendent reported a year‑over‑year enrollment drop and outlined possible staffing implications. "Last year we had 207 teachers who qualified; this year we have 326," the superintendent said when describing the Teacher Incentive Allotment program and its state funding implications.

District staff said the current enrollment figure is 16,028, down 277 students from the prior year; they estimated that if the new year began today this decline could mean approximately 11 fewer teaching positions, to be handled through attrition rather than layoffs. Trustees asked for more granular data by campus and certification area so they can evaluate impacts by grade and special programs and to translate headcount changes into dollar amounts per position.

Trustees also raised vouchers and virtual programs as enrollment risks and asked staff to study a potential district virtual program to recover ADA; the board asked that future presentations include explicit dollar impacts and campus‑level breakdowns so trustees can assess where reductions, if necessary, would occur.
