Board seeks to identify contractor after asphalt dumped on Shacker Road

The Lester Select Board discussed an incident on Shacker Road where an outside crew apparently paved a private driveway and then dumped asphalt material onto the public roadway. Board members said the crew used a skid steer to spread material on the roadbed and that, to date, they do not know who performed the work.

Members agreed to attempt to identify the contractor and to send a bill for cleanup costs (grader and loader ~3 hours each, truck time, three workers and two loads of gravel) and to copy the landowner on correspondence so the landowner is aware. "We ought to find out who they are and send them a bill and a copy to the landowner," one committee member said; staff committed to assembling a cost estimate for billing. The board noted that it may be difficult to recover full costs, but wants to put potential contractors and the landowner on notice that the activity — placing material on the public road — is unacceptable and will be pursued.
