Minister's Lot walk leads to natural-community mapping proposal

Commissioners reported that a May 30 walk of the Minister's Lot drew several collaborators, including members of the Selectboard and volunteers from nearby properties. Soil scientist Bob Zaino led soil sampling at five test plots to document stratigraphy and site conditions. Siler Russ agreed to participate in a citizen-science mapping effort, and Dan Healy is expected to propose a mapping approach that will cover soils, geology, hydrology and biotic communities.

The commission discussed use and access questions for the mostly northern-hardwood forest, including identifying vernal pools and black ash seepage areas. Troi Perkins noted that a map would help guide visitation and protect sensitive areas; the group discussed platforms for sharing maps (Avenza was mentioned) and the possibility of a follow-up walk on better weather days to include more community voices.
