Leander ISD staff recommend "My Rights, My Life" curriculum for 18+ program students

District administrators recommended that the Board adopt an LISD-adapted version of the My Rights, My Life Healthy Relationships and Sex Education curriculum for students enrolled in the district’s 18+ program who opt in to the Human Sexuality course. Kimberly Waltmon, Ed.D., listed as Administrator Responsible, and Denise Geiger, M.S., Senior Transition Coordinator, presented the recommendation and noted that "administration recommends the Board follow the Student Health Advisory Council’s (SHAC) curriculum recommendation" for this population.

The presentation said each lesson was carefully reviewed and edited to develop an LISD-adapted curriculum and that "topics not approved for instruction were removed." Participating students will receive the instruction during an elective period at the Compass Center; per district policy and Legal Policy FA (Parent Rights and Responsibilities), sex-education instruction for these students will be offered on an opt-in basis. The district also posted the LISD-adapted curriculum and a public feedback form on the district website to provide transparency and allow continued community feedback.

Administrators framed the plan as a safety and empowerment measure for students with disabilities, citing national data referenced in the background that more than 70% of individuals with disabilities report experiencing abuse. The recommendation in the agenda packet included the sample motion: "I move the Board of Trustees adopt the My Rights, My Life Healthy Relationships and Sex Education Curriculum for 18+ program students who opt in to the Human Sexuality course, as presented."
