Board approves code changes to require Yondr pouches for grades 6–12 under Texas law

Dr. Winnifred Goodman presented recommended revisions to the student code of conduct to reflect implementation of Yondr pouches for grades 6–12 in order to comply with House Bill 1481, which requires school districts to prohibit student use of personal communication devices during the school day. "As you know, House Bill 1481 requires Texas school systems to prohibit student use of personal communication devices on school property during the school day," she said, and explained the TEA Phone Free Schools grant that covered most initial costs and provided one day of on-site professional development.

Board members asked practical questions about rollout and training. When Trustee Hector Sanchez asked how many pouches were purchased, Dr. Goodman replied, "6,000. We have enough that we have enough for our high school and also for all three middle schools because it is grade six through 12." Trustees discussed distribution, stations for unlocking at day end and training for staff; Dr. Goodman said the high school rollout will begin on day one and middle schools will have a softer rollout with parent communications and open-house demonstrations.

Trustee Jacqueline Culton moved to approve the recommended revisions; Trustee Phil McNeely seconded and the motion passed 7-0. The board directed student services and campus support to communicate updates to administrators, parents and the community as part of implementation.
