Milton council sets tentative millage ceiling at 4.118 mills

The Milton Council on July 23 voted unanimously to set a proposed millage rate of 4.118 mills as the ceiling for fiscal year 27, the council chair announced.

Finance director and budget director present to the meeting said the 4.118 mills matches the previous year and, based on recently certified property values, would generate about $2,923,135 in revenue. “So tonight, the proposed millage rate is gonna be for 4.118,” the finance director said, noting the figure is a proposed ceiling to be used on property-appraiser estimate notices next month.

A council member explained the number set at this meeting is the legal ceiling: “This is the ceiling. Whatever number you set tonight is the highest millage you could end up with,” and added the council may lower the rate in later budget workshops or the final September hearings but cannot raise it above tonight's figure. The chair noted the property appraiser will print the proposed rate on estimation notices and that residents will have opportunities to comment at the September tentative and final budget hearings.

The motion to set the tentative millage at 4.118 mills was moved and seconded; the council recorded a unanimous vote of approval by all eight members. The chair said that further public input is welcome ahead of the September final vote and that a work session would follow the brief break.
