Plan Commission votes to recommend Ripon zoning-code rewrite to Common Council

The Ripon Plan Commission voted to recommend a comprehensive rewrite of the city's zoning code to the Common Council, sending the draft ordinance to council review with a plan to return a full ordinance for consideration in early September.

Consultant Matt gave the commission a high-level overview of the rewrite’s goals, saying the effort is meant to make the zoning code “more user friendly” by moving key standards into charts and lowering some minimum-lot-size floors so the rules are easier both for staff and for residents to navigate. Matt described the schedule: commission recommendation to the Common Council, a council review session next week, and a full ordinance presentation in early September so council members have time to examine the lengthy revision.

Commission discussion touched on code structure and the locations of provisions across municipal titles; staff clarified that the primary zoning amendments would be to Title 18 while access-control language appears in a separate title. After discussion a commissioner moved to recommend the zoning-code amendments to the Common Council; the motion was seconded, one commissioner registered opposition, and the motion passed.

The commission closed the public hearing after no members of the public appeared. No formal amendments were made at the meeting; staff said they will forward the current draft and schedule the council review as discussed.
