Council pushes back on commissioners' $300K contractual-services budget, asks for cuts

Commissioner representatives presented the commissioners' proposed budget, noting it was roughly $1 million higher than last year largely because of an elevated contractual-services request and an uncertain central-dispatch contribution. "Former Commissioner Middlesworth is the one that put our budget together," a commissioner said while introducing the package and explaining changes to janitorial, contractual, and personnel lines.

Councilors drilled into a roughly $300,000 contractual-services block, calling out multiple vendors the county had paid this year (Augusta Consulting, Schneider, InvoiceCloud and others). Members noted one-time or project-based items that appear in the contractual total and suggested trimming or reallocating large consultant contracts. The council agreed to reduce some contractual lines (proposing a combined approach to keep $150,000 in contractual services and reserve $100,000 for other legal/consulting needs) and to withhold final approval of central-dispatch personnel lines until dispatch's personnel costs were fully reconciled in a separate fund.
