Residents press Boone County board on development, question data center plans

Several residents used the meeting's public-comment period to press the Boone County board for answers about proposed commercial and industrial projects, including talk of a data center.

"I oppose any plans that expand this development into our neighborhood and that would destroy what is currently beautiful farmland and preserves," said Mike Novak of Genoa Road, who said he read the county's strategic plan and had not been contacted about new plans for land south of I‑90. Jeffy of Yuber Road said he shared earlier speakers' concerns and asked when the process would move from preliminary steps to final approvals. David Henderson of Center Road added that he feared impacts to drinking water, township roads and property values if drilling or other development occurs.

The comments followed an explanation from a county official about the review process for development proposals—briefing the planner, planning commission, zoning board of appeals, a county board committee, and then final county‑board action two weeks later. Speakers said they felt residents had not been adequately notified and asked the board to clarify timing and protections for existing tenants and farmland.

The board did not take immediate action on any specific project during public comment; speakers were invited to follow up with staff and the planning process outlined by the county.
