Sheriff tells commissioners Operation Arrowhead reduced violence through problem-solving policing

The Genesee County sheriff told commissioners that Operation Arrowhead — a multi-agency, problem-solving policing initiative funded partly by the M Foundation and supplemented by other sources — focuses on prevention and "culture change" rather than only arrests. He described a team of seven (a lieutenant, sergeant, detective and four deputies) that works with municipal police, state police, FBI, DEA, universities and community partners.

"We've taken 139 guns off the street," the sheriff said while presenting data he characterized as showing positive trends in arrests, warrant service and neighborhood checks. He highlighted work that links people to services — food, housing referrals and healthcare — as part of addressing root causes of crime.

The sheriff told the board Operation Arrowhead operates with roughly $1.5 million of outside funding for targeted city patrols and that the model aims for sustainability through relationships with community organizations, local colleges and federal partners. Commissioners thanked the sheriff and asked clarifying questions about scope, funding and partnerships; the presentation did not result in a new appropriation or formal vote that night.
