Residents and experts urge Levy County to pause large data‑center permits; board schedules workshop

After an informational presentation on data centers, residents and a long‑time industry consultant urged the Levy County Board of County Commissioners to adopt a moratorium so the county can draft land‑development rules addressing power, water and siting concerns. The board agreed to workshop the issue within 4–6 weeks and to seek legal guidance.

Doug Cloushey, introduced by Commissioner Charlie Kennedy, told the board that modern hyperscale data centers draw huge amounts of power and can strain local infrastructure, recommending high public visibility and a temporary pause while the county updates rules. “Hate to tell you, but there's not a good place in Levy County for a large scale data center,” Cloushey said, describing racks that can consume megawatts and emergency power generation that can run round‑the‑clock.
