Residents urge support for Cub Creek celebration and preservation

Local residents urged the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors to support a community celebration and preservation work at the Cub Creek site, which speakers said is connected to early regional religious life and the founding of two colleges.

William Crystal, a local pastor and self-described historian, said Cub Creek is a "magnificent enterprise" and asked the board to give organizers whatever support they can. "Cub Creek is an incredible asset," Crystal said during public comment, and he praised plans led by Margaret Ann Elgin and others to bring local attention to the site. Margaret Ann Elgin, who identified herself at the podium, described a planned Oct. 19 event (with a rain date) and explained the site is open-air because the church burned in 1937. She noted the site has no 911 address, outlined parking and access arrangements, said the local APVA owns the land, and explained event costs have been covered through donations, APVA fundraising and a grant.

Organizers stressed the site's historical links — Elgin said early collegial activity at Cub Creek contributed to the establishment of institutions that became Hampton–Sydney and Washington & Lee — and asked for public help with outreach and attendance. The board thanked the speakers and recorded the public comment; there was no formal board action tied to the presentation at the meeting.
