Residents press county to honor Cedric Lofton verdict and implement task-force recommendations

Several residents addressed the board about follow-up to the Cedric Lofton civil verdict and the work of the Lofton Task Force. Faith Martin asked the county to provide a public dashboard tracking task-force recommendations and urged that staff found liable in the civil case be removed from corrections duties or terminated.

"I respectfully urge the county to honor the ruling of the court and the careful deliberation of the jurors by refraining from filing an appeal," Lawanda DeShazer said, arguing that allowing the verdict to stand would provide closure to the Lofton family and demonstrate respect for the judicial process. Speakers repeatedly requested that the county use its political authority to press for legislative changes and stronger juvenile-justice policies.

Commissioners responded that a task-force web page is live and that progress has been made: the board was told 52 of 58 recommendations have been implemented, three are in process and three remain unimplemented, some due to matters outside county control. Commissioners and staff noted ongoing litigation and legal constraints around personnel actions; no personnel actions were announced during the meeting.
