Committee says special-event fee schedule should be reviewed after overtime concerns

Committee members used the permit discussion to revisit how the city funds police overtime for special events. One speaker recounted that a prior review of the special-event fee schedule concluded against charging explicitly for police overtime; instead, fees are structured to be lower for preferred routes and higher for non-preferred routes.

The committee member who raised the topic said the fee schedule has not changed in a year and proposed that public safety review the schedule again and align any revisions with next year’s budget cycle. The speaker stated, "I do have it in the plans to have public safety review the fee schedule since it didn't change at all last year, but I think that they should revisit the special event fee schedule again, to align with next year's budget cycle as well." Staff also noted a verbal estimate that certain routes could cost the city more than $1,300 in overtime, a figure the committee said should factor into the fee review.
