County allocates funds to replace aging jail locking system after safety review

Following an inspection that found the jail’s locking system antiquated and susceptible to prolonged outages, the board voted to appropriate funds from undesignated reserves to replace or upgrade the system to protect staff and detainees.

Major Colbert told the board the jail’s locking system is roughly 20 years old, has begun failing during power outages and cannot be reliably repaired; parts are no longer available. After touring the facility, Chair Bailey and others described safety and accreditation concerns and urged replacing the system before it becomes a crisis.
