KILLEEN ISD develops summer learning vision but trustees call discussion non-productive

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Terri Osborne led a detailed discussion of KILLEEN ISD's summer learning programs, reviewing participation data, program outcomes and current learning models. Staff and trustees collaboratively drafted a vision statement: “We believe summer learning in KISD should provide stimulating intervention, enrichment, and creative opportunities for learning and advancement,” and identified design priorities to serve at-risk students with remediation while providing enrichment for students who are excelling.

Trustees debated criteria for eligibility, whether remediation is effective during summer, the academic return on investment for enrichment or advanced-credit opportunities, and the cost and funding sources for summer programming. After extended discussion the board determined the conversation was non-productive and moved to the next agenda item; no formal direction or vote was recorded at the workshop.
