State ombudsman reports 73 complaints since launch, two open investigations

Brandon Simmons, the state's higher-education ombudsman, told the Senate committee the office has received 73 complaints in its first year, opened two investigations (with a third anticipated) and described triage and jurisdictional rules for complaints under SB 17 and SB 37.

Brandon Simmons told the Senate Higher Education Committee that the newly created Office of the Ombudsman for Higher Education has launched a public website (studentsfirst.texas.gov), established intake procedures and hired legal staff to handle investigations. "As of today, the office is just over halfway through our first year...To date, we have received 73 complaints. We have opened 2 investigations, and I anticipate we will soon open 1 additional investigation," he said.
