Fire district discusses county code updates, BLM application process and Project Big Wood pond work

District leaders described work with county staff to update land-use code so the fire district can gain access to remote or historically non-conforming properties while balancing safety and owner notice.

Chief Bauer said the county has suggested use of owner affidavits and case-by-case review for properties where emergency access is difficult, and that code updates are ongoing. "This is a complex and ongoing conversation," he said, noting the county raised the possibility of affidavits and that some properties may need individualized review rather than guaranteed service.

Commissioner Sarah Michael confirmed the district sent a letter supporting Project Big Wood's Hulen Meadows pond restoration and upstream protection of the bridge into Hulen Meadows. She also raised pursuing potential BLM acquisition at Griffin Butte to create housing for first responders, but said the district is not ready to develop immediately and wants to finish Greenhorn work first. Jim Keating said the first step with the BLM is to submit an application describing the exact plan; an environmental assessment would likely be required to move the application forward.

Commissioners asked staff to seek clarity and next steps with county partners and federal contacts before advancing acquisition or development plans.
