Community group asks Gary parks board for support on Brunswick Park GLRI grant

Atia Mohammed spoke to the board on behalf of the West Gary Quality of Life partnership and asked the commission to support a proposed Brunswick Park restoration project through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Mohammed said the project would focus on stormwater capture, native-plant habitat restoration, invasive-species control and youth workforce opportunities that would train residents in tree care and restoration work. “My name is Atia Mohammed, and I'm here today to represent the bonds Brunswick Park Community Revitalization Initiative, and our group is called the West Gary quality of life,” Mohammed said.

The presenter asked the board for a letter of support and an MOU so the group can coordinate continuing work in the park; staff and the chair agreed to have legal review the request and to place the matter on the next meeting agenda in executive session so legal and procurement details can be examined. The group said earlier deadlines for letters of interest had been extended, giving the partnership time to secure the board's support while it finalizes the grant submission.
