RCPS cybersecurity update: division reports 3.1M emails scanned, nearly 20,000 blocked

Wesley Williams told the school board that the division has stepped up email and endpoint defenses—Barracuda, CrowdStrike, and segmentation—and is piloting pictograph multifactor authentication; over the past 90 days the division scanned more than 3,100,000 messages and blocked close to 20,000.

Wesley Williams, executive director of operations for Roanoke City Public Schools, briefed the board Aug. 25 on division cybersecurity posture and recent threat activity. "At a national level, email remains the primary initial attack vector for school breaches," Williams said, and he described tools and processes RCPS uses to reduce risk.
