Coppell ISD updates technology framework, clarifies academic-only device use

District staff previewed an updated technology framework that emphasizes balance, human connection and academic purpose for devices. Dr. Brooks explained changes that include a zero baseline of everyday device use where appropriate, clarified action steps for academic use and monitoring, and new filtering tools (SmartPlay) for YouTube on middle- and high-school devices.

"Technology should always be something that enhances these components," Dr. Brooks said, summarizing the framework's guiding principle that devices support engagement and hands-on learning rather than replace them. Staff also noted they added references to external guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and other research and that the document is intended to evolve with new evidence and community feedback.

Trustees discussed feedback loops, parent surveys through Panorama, committee involvement and program-evaluation timelines tied to learning-walk data. Staff said device-infrastructure replacement will be considered in a future bond conversation and that the steering committee will bring program-evaluation options and cost estimates to the board for consideration.
